Always Something New
Every day
By David Levithan
Review by Sheila Butler
What would you do if you truly loved someone but you both know that it could never work? In Every day, by David Levithan, there is a confusing love story where they have to make very tough decisions.
In the second part of the book, the protagonist A, is still in love with a girl Rhiannon. A keeps trying to go and see Rhiannon. They would email almost every day to try and figure out when the best time to see each other would be. Since A changes into different people's lives every day, one day he ends up in Rhiannon’s body. A is not sure what to do because he doesn’t want to ruin anything between them. Once he switches bodies again they keep on meeting and keep getting closer. One day he went to her school to see her. He was in a male’s body so when Rhiannon’s boyfriend, Justin walked in he thought Rhiannon was cheating on him, so Justin started fighting A. After this Rhiannon told A that she needs some time and space. Towards the end of the book, A starts to realize that he will never have a family or even a real life.
Now that I have finished this book, I thought it was really good and I really enjoyed the whole story. Towards the end of the book we got to a more vulnerable side of A that was really interesting to see. This was shown when A is thinking, “No one will ever have known me or what I’ve done. If I die, there will be nobody to mark me, no funeral to attend, no burial” (268). This book also showed a lot of emotions that people can relate to when it comes to love. A loves Rhiannon and Rhiannon loves A but they both know that it could never work. People in this world today are dealing with this same problem and are going through a hard time. In the last moment Rhiannon and A spend together, A takes “a Post-it of a heart and move it from my body to hers. I see it sitting there. I close my eyes. I say goodbye” (321). This book can definitely relate to that experience of having to say goodbye no matter how much neither of you wants to. I also liked this book because the author tried to show us how we should be grateful for the life that we have and the people that we have in them. A doesn’t have a life he stays in every day and he doesn’t really have anyone but Rhiannon. He finally realizes that he will never have the life he’s always dreamed of. When he’s in different people’s lives he always thinks, “This is what I want,” (301). He gets jealous of people’s lives because he doesn’t have anything.
I feel like a lot of people would enjoy this book, but mostly teenagers and young adults. Anyone could read this book but people who enjoy romance stories should definitely read this story. This book will make you want to keep reading to see what happens next because there are so many unexpected moments that happen. This book makes you think about your own life and how lucky we are to have the lives that we have. This book is a good reflection on all the things in life that we take for granted that other people don't have. This book had a lot of thoughtful moments where there is a lot of emotion and I think a lot of people should read this book.
