Detective Stories
by Philip Pullman
To summarize, since the last book review I finally finished the book and it had a big switch in the stories. Every chapter has different stories, each one is unique and creative. This book was chosen by Philip Pullman, he is a brilliant writer and chose the best detective stories I’ve read, some other authors that stuck out to me in the book include: Erich Kastner, Micheal Underwood, Isacc Asimov and many more.
I would really recommend this book if you’re interested in murder mystery or detective stories. Every story has unexplained deaths, different mysteries, and reading about how these detectives solve them keeps you wanting to read more. I really like the layout of the book, the way the stories switch is really nice, and I like how he changes the timelines of the stories, sometimes it's the past and sometimes it's the future.

In “Emil and the detectives” by Erich Kastner, we are introduced with a little detective child named Emil. Emil, just like any other kid has a dream of becoming a detective, but he still cares about his family; “ Yes, my grandmother is meeting me at the flower stand in the Friedrich-Strasse Station” (65). Erich Kastner does an amazing job in to tell us how caring the character is. I was really surprised because when you think of a detective, the first thing that comes to mind isn't a kid. This was one of the reasons why I continued reading the book because the author’s always found a way to surprise me in every chapter.
“ Murder ST. Oswald’s” by Micheal Underwood, takes place in an old boarding school where the writer says that it's the perfect place for a detective story. We are introduced to Nigel and Webster who are talking about a recent murder that happened, and what kind of punishment needs to happen to the murderer: “We’ve got to think of a terribly clever way of killing him” (113). This story was really upsetting because as they’re talking about this a murder happens right in their school. Everyone is questioning who the murderer is, and at one point they start turning on the two characters. I felt like I was there as this was happening in the book; I really enjoyed this chapter and I think that this might have been the best one in the book.
“The Cross of Lorraine” is a story written by Isaac Asimov, he really is known for science fiction stories, but he does an amazing job in writing this one. This story takes place in a quiet town where crime really doesn’t happen. There happens to be a kidnapping, and for some reason a detective couldn’t find any traces. I like how the magician is introduced to the characters in this part, and it's a really good example to not judge a book by its cover: “And here, dressed fit to kill anyone with a real taste for clothing” (131). Everyone in the town started doubting this magician, and all of a sudden he was onto details that even the best detectives couldn’t figure out, Isaac Asimov does a good job in describing the details.
These are some of the many stories that made this book stand out to me, I chose this book because of the movie called Zodiac. Just like in the movie detectives face different killers that mess with their minds, if that’s something you are interested in then this book is for you.
