“Come daybreak, the Viper himself would knock on the front door of the Fortress” (59). Will the Viper make it out with what he needs? Or will he be caught and suffer the worst penalty of all?

A kid living in the U.S. controlled by a foreign country, and he has no power. This story is an alternate living, it is if the Axis from World War 2 would have won. The Axis Powers have split up the world so they can all have large parts but still be allies. Ren, the main character is living in San Francisco under the reign of Japan. You were shamed or thought lower of if you were not Japanese. Ren, being a Chinese-American was frowned upon pretty often. His mom, Chinese, and his dad, American. His mom was executed in front of the whole city for treason and that has stuck with Ren his whole life. He wants revenge but is too young and doesn’t have any power. There is another execution one day that is being broadcasted for all the Americans to see, but Ren had to see it in person just like his mother. There has been a little increase in revolting including someone going by the name of Viper, who has been talking bad and shaming the Japenese government. Anyone who does this has a very bad punishment if they find them, death. After another traumatic event at the execution cliffs, Ren goes home and has something to do. He runs out before their 8 pm curfew to a little underground base with a typewriter machine. He types a document and signs it “The Viper”. After this, his cousin comes to his house and asks for some help. She is the leader of The Resistance which is a group that wants to destroy the Imperial power. She asks for help, Ren needs to go undercover, and go in the base that has double the security of the white house and kidnap the princess. They create a plan for Ren to go undercover and to have a short term job there...

This book is excellent. This is one of the best history genre books I have ever read. The book had some intense yet really creative moments. “Because the chute was compromised. And with it, the mission entirely” (78). This shows a tense moment in the book. Especially because it was against the Royal Kingdom and at the end of the chapter it left me on a cliffhanger. This makes me want to read more. Anyone, I like an action-packed, intense book and it makes me really like the book. I chose this book, as soon as I saw it. It seemed like a good, new book that not many people have read or even know about. The creativeness, just reading some information on the back really drew me to read the book. Also, my opinion on the characters and character development is they are very well planned out. Ren has had some traumatic experiences with this Japenese government yet he is working undercover in the highest of security bases in the world. It is just so well though-out and creative that it will attract any reader that is interested in history. “I’ll go to the interview tomorrow. Tell me what to do”(59). This is a kid going into a very high-security base, he can’t make mistakes or he will get a bad punishment, maybe death. It shows how brave Ren is, and he will do anything to avenge his mother’s death. I like the book because of this kid and how interesting of a young kid he is. Not many books have a young kid willing to do this much, and that is why I want to keep reading and I like it so much. I want to see what happens at the end of the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history and is a curious person. This is an alternate history book, so if you are relatively familiar with World War 2, then you would enjoy reading this. The cliffhangers and such just make any reader want to keep reading. I would read this without being forced and that is a pretty big deal for a young, high school kid like me. There are a few gruesome parts, so mature people would enjoy this more.
