How would you feel if everyone would always be staring and judging you for every movement you make? This book is truly an emotional and inspiring book to read. It is a touching story with many different perspectives to hear from. Never judge a book by its cover, is a great way to explain this book.
From the book Wonder, the author R.J. Palacio, seemed as though he wanted to get a message across to the readers. Our main character, August Pullman, is that one wholesome kid getting stared and judged at for looking the way he is. Our other important characters we hear from are Via Pullman, Jack Will, Charlotte, and Julian. The genre that resembled this book the most would be children's literature. Though this is a touching book that could get some people emotional. It is set for younger kids to understand about the wrong and right with making friends or even just being around people. “The first thing she said after hugging me was: ‘So, how was it? One to ten?’ ‘Five,’ I said shrugging, which I can tell that totally surprised her." No person can ever be perfect or have the most perfect day no matter what it is.
I have yet to finish the book, but overall this would be a great book to set your mind on reading in the future. If you are the type of person that loves books that are inspirational and touching, than Wonder is a great option. If reading isn’t you go to opinion, there is a movie for this book as well. The movie is based off the book and is very similar. Basically the only difference is that you are able to see is visually and get a better perspective of what's going on.
When Jack Will speaks, he claims he never truly wanted to help out August on the first day of school. Before that happened, his mother wanted him to give August a tour around the school with two other kids. “It was because I heard Jaimie talking about how he had run away from August going ‘Ahhh,’ I suddenly felt really bad” (141). The fact Jack Will had to change his mind after the fact his little brother mentioned him running away from the disabled kid. He should understand that just because he looks different doesn’t mean he is. That argument he had with his mother about the situation really spoke to me because it took much convincing just to help a kid figure out a way around the school. During a costume party at school, August decided to dress up as something with a mask on. He walked over to Jack Will, Julian and a few other people but before he took the mask off, he overheard them talking about how frightening he looks. From that scene, August was in shock since he thought he had become best friends with Jack Will.
Once Summer introduces herself to August, he treats her with some aggression because he is thinking no one actually wants to be friends with him anymore. Mr. Tushman, their principal asked Summer and two others to introduce August to the school and her answer right away was yes. As Summer started to hang out with him more, he started getting suspicious on why she wants to be friends with him. “ ‘No he didn’t! I swear on my life’ I put my hands up in the air so he could see I wasn’t crossing my fingers” (126). August accused she was forced to be his friend but he finds out that she doesn’t care about what he looks like, she’s friends with him because he is a sweet, caring and funny person. The way the author shows this friendship between them is very subtle but sweet. That argument of August saying she was forced to become friends, made them even closer then they are now.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading books about emotional backgrounds. Even some that don't like books like this one, I would still recommend it because of its outstanding qualities. Once reading the book, I would also recommend the movie because you can get a visual view from the movie but yet get a more detailed view from the book.
