Do you ever think someone isn’t who they actually are? In the book Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea, the characters have a friend group that has been like that since almost birth. A new kid comes into town to rent the guest house of one of the friends and isn’t entirely who he says he is.
In the first chapter, we meet our main character Violet who goes by Vi. We learn about her family history and how they have a lot of money. She lives in a mansion with her twin brother Luke. Their parents are painters and they are off on vacation. The twins are low on money so Violet tries to rent their guest house to make money for them. She ends up finding someone who is willing to stay there.“ “Are you Violet? He asked, and didn’t wait for my answer. ‘Yeah, I think you are. I'm River, River West.’ ”(10). He is about the same age as her (16) and is very expensive looking in his nice car. Violets’ friend Sunshine, she has long hair and has a flirty personality. As the book progresses you get great character development. Each chapter has more suspicion about the new friend River. Violet opens up to River and tries to get him to open up to her. There becomes this suspicion about River, and Violet can’t figure it out.
Violet notices things about River and how he acts. She is very curious to learn more about him, but he won’t open up. When River came into town things were different. They had gone to the cemetery and River had told the kids things that weren’t true. Violet wanted to know why. She kept asking him and he kept ignoring to the point where he finally caved in. He has a soft spot for Violet and she knows that. "He answered me, and his eyes were deep and open like in the attic. But his mouth was sly as always and I didn’t know who to believe.” (150). She doesn’t know what to think about him at this point because what he tells her sometimes isn’t true, and he won’t open up at all. “He leaned back, so could read his face, and find the truth written there. But he wasn't giving anything away. His eyes seemed genuine and sincere, but his mouth was curled and tricksy-looking and I ended up with nothing.” (154).
This book is great for anyone who loves a little mystery or is wanting a good romance story. Some of the chapters are longer and some are shorter. Some are slow and some are quick-paced. The longer you read the better the book gets no matter how each chapter goes. Each page you open, opens up a new page full of interest. It draws the reader in with ease.
