Star hockey player Janine suffers a severe car accident while on the way back from her game that could destroy her career completely; it will be a long and tough recovery but will Janine be able to push through and fight off the pain? “ Janine, her dad said, '' We were in an accident. A week ago…”13)

The book Stick Pick by Steven Sandor is a very intense and nerve racking book that every page you read makes you want to keep reading. The genre of this book is realistic fiction because injuries occur like this all the time unfortunately, and could affect your everyday life. In this book a young teen aged girl named Janine is an excellent hockey player and also the Captain of her team. On the way back from one of her first playoff games, Janine and her father are celebrating a great win and an awesome overtime goal by Janine to win the game and advance her team to the next round. But what happens next will change Janine and everyone close to her life forever.

While merging into a lane another car swerves in front of Janine's car and they get into a huge accident. A week later Janine wakes up from a coma in the middle of the hospital, she has no idea where she is and she's extremely confused, all she can see is tears running down her dad's face and a bunch of doctors surrounding her: “She looked back toward her dad. His face was covered by his right hand. Tears streamed through his fingers. Dad? What's wrong? Why am I here ”(13.) Her dad knows that this isn't good at all, Janine can barely even feel her legs. Everyone on her hockey team was informed about Janine's injury, they all pray that Janine will have a good and easy recovery and maybe even make it back for the championship. But realistically the doctors don't know if she will ever be able to play a sport again. When Janine gets this news she is completely horrified and devastated because hockey is her life and without it she doesn't know what to do, it's like a piece of her is missing. A few days after Janine returns home from the hospital, her dad recommends she should go and visit the team, it would be good to get out of the house for a few minutes and catch up with them. Janine does not agree with this idea at all, she doesn't want her team seeing her like this at all. After all Janine decides to go just for a little so her dad will stop bothering her. When she walks into the locker room the team was wicked excited to see her but was disappointed she could not play, she gets very emotional and sad. On her way out of the rink Janine and her dad stop real quick and look out onto the ice they both notice there is a disabled and semi disabled team on the ice, and what happens next changes the course of Janine's life for ever.

This book is a really great book to read for almost all audiences. The grammar is extremely mild and the vocabulary is not complex. For example “Janine closed her eyes. She imagined she was banging her stick on the floor, screaming “ ‘Pass it!’ ” (34) This quote conveys a very important scene of the book with still great emotion but not crazy words or grammar. I would recommend this book for people that enjoy reading about comeback stories or books where the main character overcomes a huge problem or obstacle in there life. Even though this book does contain some hockey and sports even people that don't enjoy those things could still like this book because of its overall story. The message I got from this book is to never give up and with every problem you have there is always an answer even if it's not the one you are looking for. If you have ever read the books or seen movies like Iron Man, Unbreakable, Breakthrough, and Soul Surfer and liked them then you will definitely like this as well.
