Complicated Love Story

Eleanor & Park
Rainbow Rowell

How would you go about wanting to be with someone but you both don’t know how to work it out since people are trying to bring you apart? In Eleanor & Park, by Rainbow Rowell there is a wonderful story about a relationship that has its ups and downs but gets through it.

The first half of this book really focuses on the coming of Eleanor and Park’s relationship. It all starts with them sitting next to each other on the bus to school. At first they never really talked to each other or even looked at each other; instead they would just sit on the bus and just get to school. But one day, something changed; Park had brought a comic book to read and Eleanor “was reading his comics” (Rowell 35). From that day forward they bonded on two things: comic books and music. The two begin to not want to leave each other -- since they’re always thinking about each other -- and really want to start seeing each other out of school. This is difficult because Eleanor’s family situation is complicated so it’s hard for her to do what she wants. Through all of her family issues she still wants to be with Park so she finds a way to make it happen. The first step was talking to each other out of school which was difficult since she didn’t have a phone at her house but then an opportunity came up and she took it. She said she would babysit her father’s kids who live in a different house and they had a phone. They were both so excited about the call that they talked all night until her father came back. This sparked their interest in each other even more and made them want to do more things together.

I’m halfway through this book so far I am enjoying it. One of the reasons why I like this book so much is how the author wrote this book. She wrote this book so within every chapter you get perspectives from both Eleanor and Park. I love the technique because sometimes you read a book and you want to know what the other character is thinking in a certain scene but in this book you always know. I really enjoyed this book because the main characters had really good character development so far. In the beginning of the novel, Eleanor and Park never talked to each other and just sat next to each other on the bus since they were too nervous to talk to each other. As the story moves forward, they begin to talk to each other and eventually they get to the special “‘I love you’” (Rowell 119). Something that has really stood out for me in this book is Park’s character. His character is an originally shy and collected character who likes to keep mostly to himself. When he meets Eleanor he acts like a whole different person since he’s more comfortable around her. Eleanor doesn’t really fit in with the people from their school and one day Park had had enough of it. He was trying to calm himself but he couldn’t because he’s ‘“tired of them embarrassing you’” (Rowell 135). He stood up for her against her bullies and finally gained respect for the both of them.

I would recommend this book to people but only certain people. This book is a romance novel so you would enjoy this book more if you are interested in that genre. I also think that this book is written more for teenagers since it has a lot of relatable scenes and things that they could relate to more. If you are looking for an easy read and not something that you have to think about a lot then this is a good book for you. Although it might be an easy read it still is a well written book with an enjoyable storyline.
