Live our Life

The Fault in our Stars
John Green

After hearing such good things about the book I knew I had to read it. The Fault in our Stars by John Greens is a love story between two sick cancer patients. 16 year old Hazel Grace, a girl with thyroid cancer falls in love with Augustus Waters also a 16 year old with an osteosarcoma. They meet at a support group for fellow cancer patients. Hazel didn’t enjoy going to support groups until she met Augustus. After watching a movie together and telling each other about their lives they realize they have a lot in common. They bond over the novel Imperial Affliction. They emailed the author Peter Van Houten and got themselves invited to Amsterdam to ask questions about the book. They board the flight to Amsterdam and are excited to talk to Peter Van Houten even though he refuses to tell the ending of his story. On the airplane Augustus confesses to being in love with Hazel.
After reading the Fault in our Stars I would definitely recommend it to others. If you have seen the movie you would decently enjoy this book, they are very similar in the way the story is told. John Green tells the story in a way where every character is so realistic and shows how some people truly do live their lives. He shows how people in the real world would be feeling, “I felt bad for him, even though I hated sympathy people felt towards me.” Reading about how people with life threatening conditions and illnesses live is very sad. They have to live everyday with caution but living day to day the best they can, but that is what really captures your attention and makes you want to keep reading; because you really don’t know what’s going to happen next. This book is very easy to understand and enjoy because it shows you a real part of life that you may not ever experience.
This book truly shows that you never know what’s going to happen in life and you have to live it to the best of your ability. One day you feel great and have a good day — and the next your life could be changed forever. In one section of the book Hazle was having a nice day but in the middle of the night everything changes. She was immediately rushed to the hospital. Not knowing what was wrong she thought, “I was once and for all going, and I told myself - as I’ve told myself before- that the body shuts down when pain gets too bad.” (105) This just shows you have to live your life well or when you get to this point you will have regrets. That is shown in the book when a company lets sick patients go on trips so they can enjoy their time on Earth. It is really nice to see a company helping “these young hero’s wait stoically and without complaint for their one true wish.” (89) The whole book actually revolves around Hazel and Augustus using their wish to go to Amsterdam and meet their favorite author.
This story could be read and enjoyed by people who are going through a similar situation — or even someone who is just intrigued by the situations in the book. It is inspiring and nice to see such a good message in a book, enjoy your life while you can.
