Law & Mafia
The Firm
By John Grisham
What would you do if your dream job turned out to be your nightmare?
The Firm is a novel written by John Grisham that gained popularity in the ’90s; this is a story about the life of Mitchell Y. Mcdeere, who has worked hard to become one of the most renowned and well-respected lawyers in Memphis. Mitch seems to shock everyone because he joins a small private firm called Bendini, but little does he know that his new job is going to be the toughest challenge that he has yet faced. I would recommend this book to most people because the author does an excellent job of setting up Mitch’s story throughout the book. I personally chose this book because it was a novel that had drama and thriller involved. The Firm had countless cases of employees that died in car accidents, suicide, homicide, and drug addictions that sparked Mitch to accuse them of killing their own employees.
The protagonist - Mitch had just started working at his new job and he was staying up late trying to finish some files, “I know I’ve pushed and I apologize. You’ve had a tough first week” (Grisham, 85). Avery is Mitch’s secretary and he acknowledges the tough work that Mitch had faced through his first week there. After a tough first week, Avery decided to go to Mitch’s office and talk about the files. As Avery was looking around his office he decided to tell Mitch about the firm’s backstory, “He wrote a seven-page suicide note and blew his brains out” (Grisham, 93). He was completely terrified by the number of people that had died in his office, and for that reason, he demanded to change his office. Mitch just got married and after a few days, he got his bar exam results, “We aren’t supposed to know these things, but folks at Nashville told us that you made the highest score on the bar exam. Congratulations, Counselor” (Grishman, 103). Mitch was shocked and excited because he never got the time to study enough for the bar exam.
I really liked how the themes in this book changed towards the last chapters, Mitch went from having his dream job in the law firm to almost losing all of his properties in a matter of a few days. I really enjoyed reading this book because it was a page-turner and had a lot of mystery involved; I would recommend it to anyone that is a fan of thrillers, mystery, and murders.
