Never Forget

Pride
Ibi Zoboi

Your roots are what make you the person you are today. Even if you move onto bigger and better things, you should never forget where you came from.

In the Novel Pride Ibi Zoboi, Zuri Benitez, an African/Latino young women, has pride. She - and her 5 sisters - grew up in a small town near Brooklyn New York. The neighborhood isn't the best, but they make the most out of it. Across this street from their house, there is this huge mansion. Two boys, Ainsley and Darius Darcey move in. When Janae - Zuri's older sister - comes home from college, she forms a connection with Ainsley right away. Darius and Zuri also have a connection, but she keeps denying it because she just wants to spend time with her sister and family. Throughout the Novel, Zuri tries to figure out a way to get Ainsley away from her sister, but while this is happening, she forms a connection with Darius. Will her 4 other sisters rip it apart? Or will Zuri stick with her pride and focus on getting Janae back?

Ibi Zoboi is my favorite author by far. I enjoy all her books, especially this one. When reading her books, I feel like I don't need to be nervous about making sure I understand what I'm reading. Her books are easy to understand but have an amazing concept and message behind it. One quotes that I really liked that Zuri said it; “If Janae is the sticky sweetness keeping us sisters together, then I’m the hard candy shell, the protector” (43). This quote is showing how important it is for a family to work together, which is just one of the important messages Zoboi is trying to show through her writing, which is very clever to me. To add to more of the reason I liked this book is I can relate to Zuri. Like I talked about a little bit before, Darius and Zuri obviously have a connection there, but Zuri is denying it. She feels like she has better responsibilities then worrying about a boy. To avoid falling for Darius, Zuri does things like "Our eyes meet, but I quickly turn away" (55), and she also sometimes does rude things like “I just step back and close the door in his face” (61). She is always putting her guard up, which I feel like most girls do these days. I would recommend this book to anyone crowd, it is an easy read, but I especially recommend this book to anyone who likes romance novels with a little twist, like the movie To All The Boys I've Loved Before. The storyline is cute, and gives off a good message, to never forget where you came from.
