Live In Infamy
Caroline Tung Richmond

“All he knew was that The Fortress was under attack. And his mission was turning to dust in front of his eyes”(Richmond 225). Will The Viper pull of the mission to save his mom? Or will he be tortured in “rehabilitation” camps for the rest of his life?

Live In Infamy is a fictional book about what life could be like if The Axis powers; Germany, Italy, and Japan, won World War 2 -- I read this book, and already made 1 book review on it -- so I will continue from there but cover some background information still. The main character Ren is a Chinese-American. He is usually oppressed in this society because the Japanese claim America; he lives in California -- near San Fransico. His mom was publicly executed because she was “prosecuted” for going against the government. Ren is also known as the Viper but nobody knows it’s actually him. He writes against the government and he is one of the most wanted criminals in all of the Western American Territories. His cousin is also one of the leaders in the Resistance; this is a group that contradicts the Japanese. He is recruited to this group because his dad came home hurt one night from a mission. They needed him for the larger mission they had planned, so they needed a replacement that could do the same job he did in The Fortress. This was to take over the fortress and kidnap the princess to free prisoners at Alcatraz. He also got some insight from his cousin that his mom could have survived the execution and is at Alcatraz. The prisoners at Alcatraz are used for tests. They are called Anomalies. They get this injection called V2 that could kill them if they are not strong enough, or give them powers: it could be, invisibility, super speed, lightning bolts, etc… If they do get powers, their brain gets fried and they can’t think on their own. They will be controlled by the government to oppress people when they need it. Also, you get very tired if you use your powers and you are not trained properly: “The Anomalies have arrived. One Ronin flew in circles over the island, mowing down rebels and prisoners with sniper’s precision. Another swam out toward a Resistance tugboat, evading the rebels’ bullets with her impenetrable skin. And yet another Ronin used his superspeed to snatch pistols from the rebels’ hands” (Richmond 247). Ren got the job at The Fortress and has some assigned missions to do all preparing for the big kidnap of the princess: this was on planned on the day of a huge ball with many generals, kings, queens, etc. The big day comes, and something terrible happens. This mission could be a bust, or the opportunity that came randomly could save them... You’ll have to read to find out…

This book is very good. It keeps getting better and better honestly. It has some history, fantasy, and fiction. I personally really like it. I would say that there are some gruesome parts that only mature audiences could read. The book always has action or they are planning for the action so it’s never dull to read. You can look forward to something big happening in every chapter. It is very creative, and they planned the book and storyline so well. There are deep turns and things to look out for in almost every chapter. I honestly don’t enjoy reading books in my free time, I would rather play videogames or play sports, but I found myself reading this when I didn’t have anything to do. Some parts I could relate to as well. His mom being executed and then people saying he’s alive really hit me hard because I wouldn’t know what to do if something happened to my mom. So this made me really root Ren on, and hope the best for him. I wanted everything to work out so I felt I had a little connection to him, which in the end relayed me reading the book more often and enjoying it. It shows the realistic extremes of what life could be like today if World War 2 ended up in a different outcome which is frightening but very interesting -- Link for a video of what life would be like today if Germany won World War 2. This book was also good because of the fantasy part of it which I’m not usually very interested in. It was futuristic because of the superpowers the Anomalies had. It was very good because when everything was going well, it took a turn for the worst: “Hopelessness descended over Ren like a cloak. The mission had collapsed”(Richmond 211). You’re going to have to read to see what I mean.

As for the recommendation, I totally recommend this book, for mature audiences. The book is always interesting so it’s good for kids who don’t find a lot of enjoyment in reading. The kid is very relatable also, so it will be easy to have a connection to the character as you read. I think it would be too easy for some adults but it’s perfect for kids. It has a few hundred pages so It may take a bit but I can’t complain about anything in this book. If you like a mix of fantasy, and history, this is for sure a book for you.
