Hide and Seek

Out of Reach
Carrie Arcos
Review by Emely Lopez

They say people come and go. But what do you do when it’s someone you love? How do you know when someone is too far gone?

Rachel spent 16 years living a normal life just like any other teenage girl—until it was anything but normal.

Throughout the eleven chapters I have read, Rachel breaks up her life as before Micah and after Micah. Her childhood was just like any other. Rachel since a child had always looked up to her older brother, Micah. They were close in age, but also friendship wise. Unfortunately, Micah took a turn for the worst. Micah since his early years in highschool, struggles with addiction. Rachel is constantly trying to reason with herself, saying he’s okay—until one day he isn’t.

Because of Micah, Rachel holds a tremendous amount of guilt with her. Time and time again she holds herself responsible for the downward spiral Micah is going through. But her problems become worse as time goes on. From one moment to another, Micah was gone. The guilt becomes even more overwhelming when she receives an anonymous note telling her that Micah is nearby and in danger. With nothing but the smallest lead and the slightly bigger hope, she and Micah's best friend Tyler, go on basically a life or death quest to try and find Micah, but does Micah want to be found?

Additionally, not only is she trying to find Micah, but she also is trying to find herself. Rachel deals with multiple bumps in the road during this trip. From trying to wrap her head around her whole Micah situation but also figuring out what exactly she feels for Tyler.

I can honestly say that I found this book to be quite interesting. I’ve always been fond of a good mystery and addiction stories. Yet, I could never truly imagine myself in that situation. Rachel clearly provides a sense as to what it could feel like through her actions, thoughts and emotions. She reflects back to her past often through the chapters. As the reader, you are able to follow along each event that leads up to where Rachel, Tyler and Micah are now.

However, there is a down side to the book. The book starts off at a slow pace, which for some readers can become boring. There are a few hints of interesting action parts, but the majority of it is background information leading up to the events now.

But over all, from what I have read, I have a good feeling this novel will make you feel very captivated in what’s going on. I would recommend it to anyone who relates to any hardship, developing a love interest or just being a teenager in general.

The novel Out of Reach provides an emotional and relatable experience for the reader. Through the combination of using multiple events just about every teenager encounters, humor and a laid back tone, it’s easy for the reader to become hooked to this book, which is why I recommend it.
