American Street

Fabiola, a 16 year old girl from Haiti, goes to Detroit with her mother, Manman, to see their cousins, or so they try to. When Fabiola and her Mother get to New Jersey, their final destination before reaching Detroit, Manman gets detained, and Fabiola does not understand why, but Manman told her to carry on with the journey and that she’ll see her soon. Once Fabiola arrived in Detroit, she asked anyone and everyone if they have seen her Mother, but everyone looked at her as if she was dumb. After a long while of waiting, Fabiolas cousins, Pri, Donna, and Chantel pick her up from the airport, shocked to see that her mother wasn’t there, but soon realize their mom, also known as Fabiolas Aunt, is doing everything she can to get Manman to Detroit and out of New Jersey. While Fabiola is living with her cousins, she is going to continue her Junior year in America. Fabiola’s first night in Detroit was cold, not only physically, but emotionally. It seemed as if her family didn’t welcome her with open arms. That first night in Detroit, Fabiola was tossing and turning all night, didn’t get one minute of sleep, all she did was pray for her mother, hoping that she is safe, and on her way. She goes to parties and even gets a boyfriend. She's living her life as a normal, American teenager.
After reading the first part of this book, I highly recommend this book to other readers. I have honestly enjoyed every page and word that I've read. Even if you hate reading, just like me, I guarantee that you will love this book as much as I do; I just can't get enough of it. This book has a powerful message behind it, but it’s very easy to understand, that's why I enjoy reading this book so much. I like the different situations the main character is out in, and how she handles them.
My favorite concept of this book is to always be hopeful. The main characters Mother is detained in New Jersey, but every night Fabiola prays and hopes for her to come to Detroit with her and start a new life in America. Everyone should be like Fabiola, hopeful and always think for the best.
If you enjoy reality TV shows, you will definitely enjoy this book. This whole book is kind of like a reality TV show; you never know what’s going to happen, and it’s just highlighting the important things happening in the main characters life.
