The Love of Soccer
Out of Nowhere
Maria Padian
Review by Chris Ashjian
I have played soccer for my whole life, so when we needed a book I knew I needed to find one about soccer. I saw Out of Nowhere, and as soon as I read the back I realized that I would love this book. I don’t think another book could be as relatable to me as this one is, and when I started to read it I was not mistaken.
In the book Out of Nowhere by Maria Padian, the author conveys a story about the beautiful game of soccer. The main characters are Tom, Saeed and Donnie. It is a realistic fiction book that is about a foreign exchange student. The boys are all in high school and Tom and Saeed play soccer. Saeed is a boy that moved to Enniston (the town where the story takes place) from Africa. A lot of Somali’s had recently moved to Enniston because there were bad things going on where they used to live. Anyway, Tom (the captain of varsity) decides to invite Saeed and a few of his Somali friends to the soccer meeting that they are having after school. Saeed and a few of them show up and right after they had a game against their rivals, Maquoit. They let Saeed play and he surprises everyone. He scored the winning goal against the team they had been losing to for years. When Tom sees this he realizes they have been gifted the key to success.
I think this book is really interesting. The reason being that I can relate to it on so many different levels because of how much I like soccer. It’s not a book that just has snippets of it at the beginning, it talks about soccer the whole way through. Next, I like how it starts strong and goes right into it. A lot of books are boring at the beginning and people don’t like that so they stop reading that book, me being one of those people. But this book is very exciting and action packed from the get go so I get into it quicker and start to like it more. Lastly, I like that the story is about kids in high school. I’m in high school so I feel like I can understand what is going on and maybe even be in the same situation as some of the characters. Finally, I do recommend this book because it is very relatable .
I recommend this novel to students in high school or soccer players. Everyone in their school has those few kids that are very cocky and egotistical. In this book the main character, Tom, is one of those kids and people can connect real life to the book. Also, if you play or like soccer you will like this book because the author incorporates the sport into the story very well and shows real life situations for a high school kid playing soccer. All in all, I think you all should go and buy this book.
