Revenge and Real Friends
Revenge and Real Friends
Burn for Burn
By Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian
Review by Madelyn Buxton
Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.
In the book Burn for Burn by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian, many high school struggles are revealed throughout the group’s year on Jar Island. Realistic fiction is utilized to spread the authors’ messages. The story takes place on Jar Island, and it is told from three different points of view. The main characters Lillia, Kat, and Mary alternate narrating chapters. This component of the book is intriguing because it allows the reader to interpret the story from multiple perspectives. The story starts as the summer ends and the school year begins. The three girls hardly know each other at the beginning, however, as the year progresses, they find each other when they need each other most. Lillia, Kat, and Mary have many differences, but they all have one thing in common; they seek revenge. Each girl has been emotionally hurt by someone at their school, so they create a goal to give them what they gave the girls. They go on to scheme a plan to give the people they despise the karma they deserve.
If you are looking for an easy read that entertains, this is for you. I recommend this book to young adults who are looking for an interesting story with some drama. This book spoke to me because I could relate to some of the characters and their feelings, as I’m sure many young girls could. Some characters wanted revenge, and some just wanted their lives to go back to how they used to be. An important lesson that spoke to me was to stand up for yourself and not let anyone else control you. This story demonstrates manipulative friendships, which can be very dangerous. Lillia allows Rennie to manipulate her friendships, style, and decisions and it is really unhealthy. It can also be learned from his story to let go of your past if it affects the present. In this story, Mary constantly thinks about their past experiences of getting bullied. She has trouble moving on from her past, and that prevents her from being happy in the present. Based on Kat’s perspective, it is clear to the reader that standing up for yourself is not something anyone should be scared of. Kat has the courage to confront rude people and teach them lessons. One of the clearest messages shared in Burn for Burn is that karma will come back to bite you. Personally, I could connect to many characters in this book because I’ve been in many similar positions, as almost everyone has. This book heightened my awareness of other people’s feelings in a way that I won’t forget. It is important to know how even the smallest words and actions can affect others immensely.
I recommend this book to adolescent readers who are interested in drama TV shows or books. Additionally, the context of this book is pretty straightforward, so anyone looking for a basic book might enjoy this book. Lots of drama and revenge happen in this story, so you might find yourself turning page after page until you find out what happens next.
